Sherand Boyd, Jr.GRANITE CITY - Sherand Boyd, Jr., who was the cornerbacks coach and passing game coordinator at Edwardsville High, was named the new head football coach at Granite City High by the Community Unit District 9 board of education on Monday, Jan. 26, 2026, and was introduced as the new football coach Tuesday night, Jan. 27, 2026, at the Warriors' basketball game against Belleville Althoff Catholic.

Boyd replaces Steve Roustio, who stepped down following the past season, where the Warriors went 0-9. He was also appointed as a Special Education teacher.

Boyd brings solid credentials to the Warriors' program. Before he was an assistant coach for the Tigers, he coached at Belleville West, McKendree University, and at DeSmet Jesuit in Creve Coeur. Mo.

He was a standout defensive back at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo., where he led the nation in the Football Championship Subdivision (Division I-AA), tying the school's FCS single-season interception record, and was also fourth on the team in tackles. Boyd also lettered three years in football, was a captain in his senior year, starting 20 times in his career.

He earned his degree in special education at UNCO in 2019, then earned his master's degree in educational leadership from SIU-Edwardsville in 2022. He has also served as a special education teacher at DeSmet and West.

In his high school career, Boyd was a three-year captain for the Maroons, as well as a three-time All-Southwestern Conference player, helping lead West to the IHSA playoffs as a quarterback and defensive back.

Boyd becomes the head coach of a Warrior football program that last won in 2022, a 51-34 win over Madison on Sept. 17 of that year, and has lost 32 consecutive games. Granite City's football team last made the playoffs in 2018.

Granite will be rejoining the Southwestern Conference in 2026 and will be looking to turn its football fortunes around under Coach Boyd.
