ALTON — David Davis, a retired machine adjuster and group leader with 40 years of experience at Olin, was the head grandpa for this year’s Christmas Wonderland at Rock Spring Park. The annual holiday lights display, featuring more than 4 million lights, was held from Nov. 28, 2025, through Dec. 28, 2025.

Because of the Grandpa Gang's efforts, visitors were able to see cascading waterfalls, lighted trees, and hundreds of light displays that have become a beloved tradition in Alton. Proceeds from the event go to designated charities after the conclusion of Christmas Wonderland.

Davis is a Difference Maker in his community.

Davis began volunteering with the Grandpa Gang about eight years ago. He was nominated as the group’s president in April of 2025, replacing Dick Alford. He said he enjoys the camaraderie among the volunteers and the satisfaction of contributing to a cause that benefits local nonprofit organizations.

“I always liked building stuff, worked with wood, and thought about volunteering after retirement,” Davis said. “I have been with the Grandpa Gang for eight years, and I’m up there every day. It’s very rewarding knowing what we do helps out many other people.”

Despite early challenges with weather this season, Davis noted cooperation with the Alton Parks and Recreation Department and Alton Public Works Department helped keep the event on track.

“We had some rough snow last weekend, but we worked with Alton's Park and Recreation Department and Alton Public Works Department to keep roads cleared and reopened the park for visitors,” he said.

The Christmas Wonderland typically sees heavy attendance on weekends, with Davis estimating 15,000 to 17,000 visitors on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights during peak weekends.

Alford, who had been running daily activities for the event as the previous head grandpa, remains involved in the project.

“I like a challenge, and it keeps me active,” Davis said of the head grandpa experience with Christmas Wonderland.

The Christmas Wonderland continues to be a highlight of the holiday season in Alton, combining festive lights and community spirit to create a memorable experience for families and friends.
