After posting a 4-23 record in the 2021-2022 season and 6-25 in 2022-2023, Alton improved to 17-15 in 2023-2024 under Coach Dudley. The following season in 2024-2025, the Redbirds went 26-7 overall, achieved a 10-2 mark in the Southwestern Conference, and secured a regional title.

This season, Alton is off to a 6-3 start overall and undefeated at 3-0 in conference play. Alton defeated rival Edwardsville 73-44 in a game on Dec. 12, 2025. The win was one of the Redbirds' best efforts of this year's campaign.

Dudley emphasized the importance of accountability and passion among the team and its supporters. He also credited the Alton School administration and the school board with key support.

“I think we started turning the program around and became more competitive because we have great kids, and parents who hold them accountable, or some adult outside of our coaching staff that holds them accountable,” he said. “I always try to stress with the coaching staff and my parents where my passion and intensity for the game comes from, because I don’t want to let those kids down. I do everything I can to see them win.”

Dylan Dudley, Allie and his son.Dudley also highlighted the role his family has played in his coaching journey. His girlfriend of nine years, Allie Epping, who serves as the head athletic trainer at McKendree University, and their young son, Kylin, have been significant sources of support.

Allie Epping.“The good Lord has blessed us in a lot of ways,” Dudley said. “Allie has sacrificed more than she should. Our family is what it is because of her.”

He described Epping as his “rock” and credited her understanding of the demands of coaching and athletics as an athletic trainer at McKendree University.

“She came into my life just when I needed someone like her to put things in perspective. She is an athletic trainer, so she gets the time demands, she understands the ups and downs of a season, but she has helped me learn to have a better work-life balance,” Dudley said.

“She knows how much winning means and its importance, but she is also not afraid to tell me, ‘enough is enough, shut your computer off and be present' for her and Kylin,” he added.

Coach Dudley expressed optimism about the current season, expecting continued growth and success.

“I expect the best yet to come this season in my squad,” he said.

The Redbirds continue to build on their recent achievements as they aim to maintain their upward trajectory in the Southwestern Conference and beyond.

Reflecting on how fatherhood and his relationship with Allie have influenced his coaching, Dudley said, “I am a much improved coach, but I’m a better person and dad all due to her. She’s my rock. I couldn’t do any of this without her.”
