Owned by Adam Marburger, the honoree has undergone a recent rebranding, transitioning from its former identity as Alton Martial Arts & Fitness. Located at 2716 Corner Court in Alton, Marburger opened operations eight years ago and has five employees today.

A lifelong martial artist and local businessperson, Marburger had a longtime dream and turned it into a reality by opening his own jiu-jitsu academy. His vision: To create a welcoming environment that is also family-focused while building a space where anyone can feel supported and confident.

“Adam recognized how intimidating traditional fight gyms could be for newcomers,” notes Alton Elite’s Jacquelin Koehne. “He is committed to redefining the training experience, prioritizing approachability, community and personal growth.”

With its recent rebranding, the academy continues to evolve to meet the needs of the community but also stays rooted in its core values. “We’ve transitioned into our new facility at 2716 Corner Court, expanded our community partnerships, and strengthened our mission to serve Alton and the greater Riverbend area through high-quality instruction and meaningful impact,” explains Koehne further.

Alton Elite Jiu-Jitsu has also made some changes within its staffing. The academy has elevated its coaches to an equal base, Koehne says, and Marburger, who has a Black Belt, serves as head coach and leader.

Continuing education is another way Alton Elite keeps up with a changing world. Koehne says ongoing professional development is a priority for coaches, and the gym also funds training, certification and skill development opportunities whenever they see an end benefit for students. For example, Koehne points out, Alton Elite’s women’s program lead has continued pursuing her Pink Belt certification through Gracie University “to further strengthen our self-defense instruction.”

So, then, what else sets Alton Elite Jiu-Jitsu apart?

Koehne’s answer: “Our culture – centered around community, family, and authentic connection – is what truly sets us apart. Alton Elite Jiu-Jitsu is the longest-standing academy of its kind in the Alton area. We’re proud of the deep, long-lasting relationships we’ve built, and the trust the community continues to place in us.”

“Our greatest opportunities have been in positively impacting the lives of our students: Children, teens and adults alike. Watching students build confidence, discipline and resilience is the true reward of our work. We’re honored to play a role in their journeys,” Koehne adds further.

Alton Elite has also made an indelible commitment to community engagement and service.

This year, for example, the academy hosted a seminar to benefit The Backstoppers and raise funds to support families of fallen first responders. The academy also partners with Centerstone by providing training opportunities for grant-funded students, which gives the students access to the life-changing benefits of jiu-jitsu.

Continuing to expand its partnerships as new outreach initiatives are developed, Alton Elite Jiu-Jitsu further provides support to Riverbend Rescue and Riverbend Yoga.

“We proudly participate in community-centered events such as Jiu-Jitsu for Joy, supporting Riverbend Rescue and local wellness organizations,” says Koehne. “And our Backstoppers Benefit Seminar successfully brought together community members, first responders and martial artists for a powerful cause. Events like this help strengthen our relationships with the community and allow us to continue giving back.”

“We are also proud of our growth, our rebranding, and the increasing ways we are able to serve our community,” she says further. “Alton Elite Jiu-Jitsu is more than a gym; it’s a family. As we continue expanding, we look forward to creating even more opportunities for connection, empowerment and positive impact.”
