ST. LOUIS - The Boston Red Sox have acquired veteran right-hander Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals in a trade announced Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2025, sources told MLB.com. In exchange, the Cardinals will receive left-hander Brandon Clarke and right-hander Richard Fitts, according to the report.
Gray, 36, is entering the final year of a three-year contract with St. Louis that includes a $30 million club option for 2027 and a no-trade clause. The Red Sox are expected to renegotiate the deal into a one-year contract worth $31 million for the 2026 season, with a mutual option and a $10 million buyout, according to The Athletic.

A 13-year major league veteran and three-time All-Star, Gray finished as the runner-up to Gerrit Cole for the American League Cy Young Award in 2023 while pitching for the Minnesota Twins. He became a free agent after that season before signing with the Cardinals.
Over his career, Gray has compiled a 3.58 earned run average with 1,925 strikeouts across 330 starts. The Red Sox, whose rotation currently features left-hander Garrett Crochet, add an experienced arm to their pitching staff with the acquisition of Gray.
