It’s fall, y’all. Actually, it’s starting to feel more like winter as the days get shorter. It’s cold, it gets dark early, and this week’s forecast promises rain and gloom all day long. So far, this weather has zero stars from me.

However…the leaves. Right after I complained that we had no fall leaves, the Riverbend delivered with vibrant oranges and reds and purples. I took a drive down the River Road last weekend and stuck my head out the window as I wound up the trails through Pere Marquette State Park.

It was gorgeous. This experience reminded me of all the reasons why I love living in the Riverbend. I also recently biked through the trails in Madison County (I’m a bicyclist now, remember?) and crunched my way over a blanket of leaves. What a beautiful home we have.

All of that being said, though, the winter blues are starting to settle in. We’re getting closer and closer to those short days and bitter temperatures. I know myself. And I know a lot of other people also lose their cool when it gets too cool outside.

We’re in it together, but I refuse to be bogged down by the blues this season. I’m determined not to pull a Jack Nicholson in “The Shining.” All work and no play makes Sydney a dull girl. Nope. We’re going to have fun. We’re going to white-knuckle it until spring if we have to.

How am I combatting the gloominess of winter? Well, let me tell you.

  1. Tea. Lots of tea and apple cider and hot drinks. There’s nothing that feels quite as cozy as wrapping your hands around a warm mug and letting the heat from your drink take away some of the frost in your soul.
  2. Sweaters. Like all English majors who dress like their grandmothers, I love me a big chunky sweater. I broke out my sweater collection as soon as there was a hint of chill in the air, so I’ve actually been wearing my sweaters for, like, two months now. But I plan to wear them out before winter ends. I can’t wait.
  3. Sad music. Now, this might seem counterintuitive. I’m writing about how to push the blues away, not invite them in. That being said, there’s nothing like some sad music to get you in the wintry spirit. Think Phoebe Bridgers’s Christmas album. Think “All Too Well” ten-minute version. Think “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over,” which, for some reason, always makes me long for January. These songs will be on repeat.
  4. The Charlie Brown Christmas special. Need I say more? As Charlie Brown laments the commercialization of the holidays and Linus reveals the true spirit of Christmas, I always tear up. It’s the perfect balance of funny nostalgia and true holiday joy.
  5. Outside walks. Yes, it’s cold, and yes, it gets dark early. But that’s never stopped me! I love a long, peaceful walk, even if it’s at night, even if it’s snowing. Fresh air goes a long way in keeping us all sane, and even though the weather isn’t super conducive to a walk, I will be stubbornly trudging along.
  6. Volunteering. After all, that’s what the holidays are all about, right? Helping others and spreading love. I’m looking for new ways to give back this season, and I can’t wait to jump back into some of my favorite volunteer opportunities. If you’re also hoping to help out, here’s a list of ways to get involved this holiday season and beyond.

Of course, there are other ways to stay in a happy mood. If you’ve got any suggestions, I’m all ears! But in the meantime, here’s what I’ll be doing. I’m excited for the holidays and eager for some snow and, above all, ready for spring. But what a gift to experience all four seasons. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again — we have a really cool place to call home.
