A Cause Sprinkled with Blood: The Life of Owen Lovejoy; Abolitionist, Pastor and Congressman with Rev. Owen Bryant Lovejoy and Rev. Elijah Patrick Lovejoy Monday, November 9, 2026 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Hayner Genealogy & Local History Library 401 State Street, Alton 62002 Reverend Owen Bryant Lovejoy, the great-great grandson of Owen Lovejoy, and his son, Reverend Elijah Patrick Lovejoy, with special guest Alton School District Superintendent Elaine Kane, will be presenting a reader’s theater piece to mark this year’s Lovejoy Day. Hayner Library and the Elijah P. Lovejoy Memorial are co-hosts for this program. Owen Bryant Lovejoy was born in Illinois but most of his childhood and youth were spent in Indiana. After a dramatic conversion, he attended Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, KY. and Erskine Theological Seminary in Due West, SC. He has pastored churches in Kentucky and North Carolina. Owen and his wife, Anita, have been married for fifty years. Black Mountain, NC has been their home for most of their married life. Owen recently retired from mission work in Honduras. Anita retired from teaching ESL in public elementary schools. Since his retirement, Owen has written a book about his great, great, grandfather: A Cause Sprinkled with Blood: The Life of Owen Lovejoy; Abolitionist, Pastor and Congressman. Elijah Lovejoy and his wife, Brandi, have been married for 25 years. They live in Hope Mills, NC with their five children, ages 8-16, dog, cat and flock of chickens. They have travelled extensively on international mission trips and study abroad opportunities. Elijah has served as the Pastor of Resurrection Church for nearly ten years, where he works to lead, build up, revitalize and plant local churches in the Anglican context.
