About this event

Join us for a custom, naturalist-led hike to explore The Nature Institute’s preserve during the winter while trails are closed to the public, a real treat! Hiking in winter when the foliage is absent allows us to see the true beauty in these “naked” trees. And we can see so much more of the forest that we can’t see during the other seasons.

This family-friendly two-hour hike will be an advanced beginner to intermediate level.
Topics covered include
Winter Tree ID: Learn to identify trees during the winter months by their bark, buds, and branching!
Birds: Learn to identify some of our wintering bird species here in Illinois.
Property history and seasonal happenings.
The hike will take place in all winter weather conditions, so please dress in layers for current weather. Bring binoculars, water, and a snack.

While we don't normally charge a fee for our outings, a small fee is required to cover the cost of the naturalist and to support the work of The Nature Institute. Cost depends on the number in the group and it should be no more than $5 per person. Please bring cash.

This outing is limited to 20 participants. Registration is required. A waiting list will be available.

Please meet at 9:45 a.m. in the parking lot to check in and prepare for hiking.
