Guest Artist in SIUE’s Department of Theater and Dance, Sean Graney, is a freelance director/playwright in Chicago and debuts his new adaption of the time-honored tale of Cinderella while putting his own unique brand on the story. Mr. Graney is quick to point out about his version, “It’s not a musical, and it isn’t intended for children.” Harkening back to the original Brothers Grimm and even earlier versions of the story, Mr. Graney’s version would give Carl Gustav Jung, the noted Swiss psychiatrist whose importance in the history of psycho-analysis rivals that of Sigmund Freud, plenty to think about. Cinderella knows something is not right and it is not just the way her step-mother and step-sisters treat her. When she is visited by Motherghost who hints at terrible wrongs, Cinderella is more convinced than ever. A corrupt kingdom, governed by a corrupt king, might have a chance at redemption when the prince proves himself to be a good man. Despite the political trickery by Fox, the king’s right-hand-man, a noble Handmaid confirms Cinderella’s worst fears. The climactic scene reveals the depth of betrayal and causes a royal blood-letting battle that rights some wrongs, and unearths others.
Mr. Graney is the Founding Artistic Director of The Hypocrites, which he began in 1997, and with which he has directed many shows. He was a participant in NEA/TCG Career Development Program for Directors 2004/06. He won two Jeff Citations for Direction, and garnered several Jeff Nominations for adaptation and was voted “Best Avant-Garde Director” by Chicago Magazine.
