The 2021 St. Louis Walk for PKD is virtual with "10 days. One goal." theme. The St. Louis Walk for PKD is taking place from October 8-17. Jean Sommer, the St. Louis Chapter and Walk Coordinator, said, "The Walk for PKD is your opportunity to put your passion to end PKD into action! As our signature fundraising event, 100% of donations made to the Walk will go to critical PKD research to help find treatments and a cure." Take the time today to register a team, register individually, join a team, and/or gather team members to register and donate. WE enourage walkers to wear PKD gear and walk in a different area each day. Please take picutres and post on social media using hashtag #WalkforPKD and other hashtags found on the Walkforpkdcure.org site under the 10-days of activities.

ABOUT PKD:

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is one of the most common, life-threatening genetic kidney diseases. PKD causes uncontrolled growth of fluid-filled cysts in both kidneys, often leading to kidney failure. Once a person has kidney failure, transplant or dialysis are the only options to treat the damage the disease has caused. PKD patients are in urgent need of treatments and a cure.

There are two types of Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD): autosomal dominant PKD (ADPKD) and autosomal recessive PKD (ARPKD).

1. ADPKD is more common and affects an estimated 600,000 Americans and 12.4 million people worldwide. Parents with ADPKD have a 50 percent chance of passing it on to each of their children. Approximately 10 percent of the people diagnosed with ADPKD have no family history of the disease, with PKD developing as a spontaneous (new) mutation. Once they have it, they have a 50 percent chance of passing it on to each of their children.

2. The less common form, ARPKD affects approximately 1 in 25,000 children WORLDWIDE, and often causes death in the first month of life. Only 70% of children born with ARPKD survive the newborn period and one-third of those who survive will need dialysis or transplantation by the age 10.
