Gene Ursprung has a Masters of Fine Arts degree from SIUE. He taught at West Junior High for many years and then high school for 18 years. During his time teaching junior high and high school, he coached football, basketball, and track as well. He also taught photography at Lewis & Clark Community College for a number of years. His work goes back 50+ years drawing inspiration from his time growing up in the country on a farm and exploring new landscapes as well as local cityscapes. He was a photographer for a while, but wanted to see what could be done without a camera. Ursprung likes the process that goes into drawing and painting, and he likes to mix mediums. He says that “art is like music; it switches around. Abstract art teaches you to free up a bit.” He focuses on drawing and painting in different mediums of pen & ink, watercolor, oils, and a hybrid of ink and colored pencil. He enjoys the freedom of watercolor and abstraction.
