MVRBC provides life-saving blood and blood products to over 70 hospitals inIllinois,Missouri,IowaandWisconsin, including Saint Anthony'sHealthCenter. Donated by thousands of people, the blood is used to save lives in surgeries, traumas, cancer treatments and treatment of a wide variety of diseases.
Platelet donors are also needed. Platelets only have a shelf life of five days so the supply must be constantly replenished. Platelet donors are eligible to donate every two weeks if they have not donated whole blood in the previous 56 days. Two types of patients that use platelets regularly are cancer patients and neonates (premature babies).
To be eligible to give blood, you must be at least 17 years old (16 in Illinois with parental consent) and weigh at least 110 pounds. The actual blood donation takes approximately 10 minutes, and the entire process lasts about one hour.
