About this event

Basic Tactical Self Defense

Have you wondered how you would respond to a personal, physical attack? Or how to respond to a fire fight with your conceal carry pistol? When must you draw and fire? When should you leave the gun holstered and fight hand to hand? Do I run? Do I hide? Do I fight? These and other questions are addressed in this course. This is not a course for beginning shooters. Participants will learn to draw and fire, move forward and backward while firing, reload on the fly and engage multiple targets. We will learn the difference in how to fire from cover versus how to fire from concealment, and you will perform both tactical and administrative reloads. Speed is not required…smooth and safe IS required. Students move only at a speed where they are comfortable and safe.

This is a two-day, active course where you will be physically and mentally trained to answer the above. It is a combination of classroom and tactical shooting range activity. You will learn basic hand-to-hand skills designed to prevent your becoming another victim. Remember, you cannot always carry a concealed firearm to every place you may want. Unlike the concealed carry course, on the firing range you will carry your holstered gun locked and cocked! We will learn how to point shoot as well as how to draw while moving into the firing position and fire. As our skills increase, we will learn how to properly move toward the target while firing, then how to walk backward while firing, then sideways while firing. When your gun “runs dry,” you will perform a tactical reload and continue to fire. We will also learn how to work as a team with another shooter. This course can be physically demanding.

We will set up barriers representing cover and concealment and actually use the classroom training on the range. We will learn when to use a tactical reload and when to use an administrative reload. For those who want to learn the proper use of a laser on a pistol, you will have the opportunity to learn this skill. Finally, we will set up and you will learn how to safely engage multiple targets—both when they are together—and when they are separated. Remember! You “own” that bullet until it comes to a rest. So engaging separate targets involves some different presentation and attitude.

Acceptable pistols are semi-automatic or revolvers that are full size or compact. No sub-compact, derringer, or other small pistol will be allowed. No magnums, +P, or +P+, or calibers larger than .45 ACP. Full metal jacket (FMJ) cartridges are required (No hollow-point or critical defense ammunition). Participants will need a proper holster that fits the gun. No shoulder holsters, ankle holsters, pocket holsters or inside waistband holsters will be acceptable. Preferably, a waistband holster such as Blackhawk Serpa, Galco, etc., is what you should use. If you have questions concerning your pistol or holster, or you wish to ask for a size exception, call the instructor. You will also need 2 additional magazines or speed loaders for your pistol and a minimum of 250 rounds, 300 would be better, depending upon your accuracy!

Classroom instruction will begin on Saturday morning with range activity occurring on Sunday. We will spend at least 5 hours in the classroom learning hand-to-hand tactics and the pistol basics of what we will do at the range, which will take 6 hours. Both days will require your pistol and holster. After all, if you are carrying and encounter a hand-to-hand situation, the bad guy may try to take your gun…you need to know how to prevent that! But only bring ammunition to Sunday’s range activity. In this environment, safety is of paramount concern and any student not following directions or showing any unsafe action will be dismissed from the range and no refund will be issued.

You will need to bring your current CCW license, FOID card if an Illinois resident, and an attitude of safety. The cost for this course is $275.00 for both days. The deposit required to hold your position is $100.00 and due to the inherent danger involved, we are accepting only a limited number of students for safety reasons. You will need to provide your lunch for both days. Bottled water will be available.
