“Prana” means life energy and “ayama” translates as “to extend or draw out.” Pranayama means breath extension or control. Our breath is a reflection of our mental state – we breathe differently when we’re excited, calm, tired or angry. By learning to control our breath, we can calm ourselves down or energize ourselves when we’re tired.
In this class, Sasha Bassett will guide students through breath awareness, then practice several pranayama exercises such as nadi sodhana (alternate nostril breathing), uijayi (victorious breath) and sama vritti (equal breathing). Others will be introduced based on the students present. Some very simple and easy exercise linking breath and movement may be done as well but nothing strenuous.
