EDWARDSVILLE - Incoming sophomore Jake Brinker delivered a freshman standout season for the Edwardsville High School boys tennis team this past spring, winning the individual sectional championship and turning in a strong performance at the state tournament. Brinker's head boys tennis coach says the future is incredibly bright for this young tennis phenom.

Brinker is a Spencer Homes Male Athlete of the Month for the Tigers.
Head boys tennis coach Dave Lipe said Brinker played No. 1 singles all season and emerged as the top local player.
“He did a great job playing No. 1 all year and he had a fantastic year. I think he can get a lot better over the next three years,” Lipe said.
Lipe said Brinker’s success this spring could be a sign of what is ahead for both the player and the program.
“I expect big things from him for the future,” Lipe said. “He is a fantastic player, and we expect him to continue to have a major impact on the program. He was the best singles player in the Metro East this year and didn't lose a set to anyone locally.”
Brinker’s background in the sport has also played a role in his development, according to Lipe, who said tennis has long been part of his family.
“His dad plays a lot with him; both of his sisters play tennis. He has played a lot of tennis for a long time; we knew since he was in seventh grade he would compete for the top spot,” Lipe said.
