Russell Dean Heitzman, 65, passed away at 1:53 a.m., Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at OSF St. Anthony’s Health Center in Alton, following a brief illness.
He was born on February 14, 1959 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Alton, one of eleven children born to the late Joseph Edward and Henrietta Ruth “Maggie” (Bock) Heitzman.
Russell was employed for 20 years at the former ConAgra Flour Mill in Alton, where he retired as a Bulk Flour Loader.
From a young age, Russell had a natural athletic ability and excelled in the sport of Baseball. Even into adulthood, he continued to play the sport and pitched 13 consecutive no-hitter games at the mound.
He enjoyed a good game of pool with the his family and friends and dedicated countless hours volunteering with the County Fair and the Eagles lodge frying fish throughout the years.
He was as a jokester and a story teller, whether they were always factual or not is up for debate, but regardless they always made for a good story and a good laugh.
Surviving are five brothers and their spouses, Joseph and Susan Heitzman of Dow, John and Sandy Heitzman of Dow, Danny Heitzman of Brighton, Matthew and Tina Heitzman of Jerseyville and Thomas and Kathy Heitzman of St. Peters, Missouri; along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Henrietta “Penny” Hart, Sherry Trask and Betty Hall; two brothers, Mark Heitzman Sr. and Fredrick Heitzman; as well as a nephew, Douglas Hart.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of funeral services at 12 p.m., Friday, May 10, 2024 at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
Burial will follow at the Newbern Cemetery in Dow.
Memorials may be given to the family to assist in the placement of a monument at Russell’s gravesite.
