On March 14th 2018, Alton High School students participated in National Walkout Day. The national event is just one of several events that have shown an increase in student civic engagement. The event occurred from 10:00 AM to 10:17 AM, with students gathering at the entrance of Alton High School to conduct a brief rally focusing on the gun control debate and student safety. Each minute of the 17 minute walkout represented one of the 17 fallen students of the most recent mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. The event was permitted by school faculty with school staff directing students and state police on hand to manage traffic and secure the parking lot.
