For French Toast:

  • 1 loaf (16 ounces) French bread, sliced 1″ thick on the bias (about 20 slices)

  • 8 large eggs, beaten

  • 2 cups half-and-half

  • 1 cup milk

  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • Dash salt

For Praline Topping:

  • 1/2 pound butter, softened

  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed tightly

  • 1 cup pecans, finely chopped

  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Make Ahead:
  1. Prepare a 9 x 13-inch baking pan by generously buttering the pan.
  2. Slice the French bread on the bias into about 1″ thick pieces making about 20 slices. Line the French bread slices in two rows in the baking pan. You may have to arrange them at an angle and tuck them in together.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the rest of the ingredients and pour over
  4. the top of the bread; making sure it goes in between the slices. You may have to move the bread slices a part to get the bread fully coated.
  5. Cover with foil and put in the refrigerator to sit overnight to soak in all of that custard.
  6. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Praline Sauce:
  1. Mix together all of the praline ingredients until well incorporated.
  2. Remove the foil from the pan and drop spoonfuls of the praline sauce over the top of the French toast, then go back and spread it with a spoon just like you were frosting a cake.
  3. Bake uncovered for 40 minutes. As the casserole bakes, the topping melts and forms a wonderful praline topping.
  4. Top it with pure maple syrup!
