He enjoyed yard work and gardening, family gatherings and stockcar races. He attended Twelfth Street Presbyterian Church in Alton.
Surviving is a brother, Donald McElroy of Alton, two sisters-in-law, Anita McElroy of Godfrey and Peggy McElroy of Swainsboro, GA, a brother-in-law, Monte Slanker of Godfrey, and several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers; Glenn C., John, and Charles McElroy, and three sisters; Lucille Slanker, Edith Beets, and Adalia McElroy.
Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday. Reverend David Olson will officiate. Burial will be at Upper Alton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Heartland Hospice.
