Dr. Thomas John "Tom" Waters passed away October 2, 2026, at age 82.
Born in Alton, Illinois, Tom was a proud alumnus of Marquette High School. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi. An accomplished psychologist and educator, he served as Director of Psychological Services at East Louisiana State Hospital, as a school psychologist with East Baton Rouge Parish Schools, and taught at LSU, Southern University and Baton Rouge Community College.
A devout Catholic and accomplished pianist, organist and singer, Tom had a lifelong passion for music, theater and performing. He loved history, learning and animals, especially his dogs, whom he encouraged to sing along! Outgoing and generous, he never met a stranger and loved entertaining family and friends. Above all, he cherished his beloved wife, Joyce, with whom he shared nearly 60 years of marriage, and his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Elaine Bates Waters, and parents, Henry "Tom" Waters and Mary Jane Beiser Waters. He is survived by his only child, Wendy Waters Boyle (Jim), and grandson, James Boyle, of Baton Rouge; sister, Mary Wauneta Waters; brothers, Marc Waters (Decia) and Mike Waters (Julene); and nieces, Lauren and Molly, of Alton, Illinois.
Visitation will be Friday, October 9, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at St. George Catholic Church in Baton Rouge, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at noon and interment in the St. George Mausoleum.
