Barbara Sue (Spears) Hastie, 83, died at 10:09 p.m., Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at Jerseyville Manor.
She was born on July 6, 1943, in Kampsville, Illinois, the daughter of the late Harvey and Octavy (Kramer) Spears, and was the eleventh of their twelve children.
Barb was raised in Calhoun County, Illinois, where one of her fondest memories was being a cheerleader, beginning in elementary school and continuing all the way through the twelfth grade. She graduated with the Class of 1961 from Calhoun High School in Hardin, where, as one of her classmates fondly shared, “She was a real looker!”
Shortly after her graduation, her parents relocated to St. Louis, Missouri, in pursuit of greater occupational opportunities. Barb excelled and blossomed in her new surroundings, establishing a career that included secretarial and bookkeeping positions, as well as assisting with multiple family businesses. Along her journey, she made many lifelong friends and enjoyed going out, with dancing being her specialty.
It was, in fact, during an evening out dancing that she met her future husband, Robert “Bob” Hastie. The two were united in marriage on September 12, 1964, in St. Louis, Missouri, and happily shared many more nights together on the dance floor. Their marriage was blessed with one son, Gregory Sean.
Barb and Bob made their home in St. Louis for the majority of their married life, until Bob became ill and they relocated to Jerseyville in 2011 to be closer to family. Shortly after arriving in Jerseyville, they became members of Holy Ghost Catholic Church.
Surviving are two of Barb's brothers, Harvey “Sonny” Spears and Larry Spears of Jerseyville; along with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bob, on May 7, 2016; their beloved son, Gregory Hastie, on May 4, 2010; six brothers, Oliver, who died during World War II, Kenneth, Joseph, Eddie, Virgil and Charlie; and three sisters, Lucille Lawson, Betty Cherry and Delores Settles.
The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff of Jerseyville Manor and Holly Brook for the compassion and tender loving care provided to Barb throughout her illness. She passed away at Jerseyville Manor, where those who provided the loving care she needed had proudly bestowed upon her the affectionate nickname “Spicy.”
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday, October 1, 2026, at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 12 p.m., Friday, October 2, 2026, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville.
She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband and son at a later date at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to The Fischer House in Saint Louis, in care of Crawford Funeral Home, in recognition and appreciation for the hospitality and housing provided to Barb during Bob's many hospitalizations at the Jefferson Barracks V.A. Hospital.
