Brenda Kay Tanksley (nee Cottonaro) of Granite City, passed away peacefully at her home with her family on Saturday, September 5, 2026.
She was born October 25, 1939 in Murphysboro, Illinois, the youngest child of Carlo Anthony Cottonaro and Mabel Louisa Cottonaro (nee Sheppard).
Brenda married the love of her life, Ronald Sherman Tanksley, on August 24, 1956 in St. Clair County, Illinois. They built a family and life full of love, laughter and memories that lasted for forty-four years until Ron's death in 2003.
Brenda was a homemaker who devoted her time to keeping a warm and welcoming home for her family. She loved to decorate as she was very creative and always had that special touch with all she did, she liked to travel, but mostly she loved being around her family She took great pride in watching them grow through the generations
She is survived by her loving daughters; Ronda "Katy" Crown Whittington and Lorri (Eric) Tanksley Lamarr, both of Granite City.
Known as "Gammy" or "Gram" to five grandchildren, Leslie N. Whittington (Cindy), Adam S. Crown (Chrissy), Lori K. Avants (Gregg), Lacy A. Whittington and Tia Wente (Derrick).
Eleven Great grandchildren; Cameron Borth Crown (Taylor), Reilly Crown, Gregg Avants (Hallie), MacKenzie Crown (Dillon), Jorden Whittington, Hannah Avants, Lucas Crown, Alayna Wente, William "Billy" Smith, Asa Avants and Aiden Wente.
Eight Great, greatgrandchildren; Everlie Kagy, Jackson Crown, Vivian Crown, Raelie Kagy, Waylon Avants, Harper and Hudson Rhoads. And Baby Weston Kagy who will be here in a few weeks.
Her sister Carlene Wirth of Collinsville, along with countless nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved son in law Leslie D. Whittington.
