Carol Apple, 100, formerly of Fosterberg, IL, passed away on July 5, 2026. Carol was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.
She was born on September 24, 1925, in Bethalto, Illinois to Elmer and Alberta Wood Schoeneweis.
She married James V. Apple on February 19, 1949. He passed away on December 27, 1990.
Carol worked at Olin Corporation from 1943 to 1989, first as a cost clerk then as a secretary. She was a longtime member of Bethalto United Methodist Church and was active on the church board and with UMW. Carol’s family was involved in horse-showing for many years, and she made herself invaluable as a show secretary and club officer. She was honored with a lifetime membership to the Illinois Paint Horse Association in recognition of her service to the club.
Carol was also active with the local Illinois Boots & Saddle Club, as well as a 50-year member of Order of the Eastern Star, Bethalto Chapter #847. In her later years as a resident of Asbury Village, she was involved with various governing committees and was a very active card-player. Never idle, Carol was an avid knitter and made countless afghans that are cherished by her family and friends. Her family treasures memories of her well-executed Thanksgiving meals, with Carol being in charge of making the turkey, dressing, gravy, and pumpkin pies.
She is survived by a son, Gerald Apple and his wife Nancy, and a daughter, Mary Kay Cognata and her husband Brian. Also surviving are grandchildren Emily Gropp (Jason), Liz Hughes (Michael), Paul Jungers (Krissy), Ted Jungers, Jake Apple (Lindsey) and Gerald A. Apple. Great-grandchildren are Maggie and Oliver Gropp; Philip and Joanna Hughes; Sophie and Naomi Jungers; Charlotte, Corinna, and Kieran Apple; and Sydney, Lucas, and Alana Apple.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Glen Schoeneweis, her sister, Carmen Piltz, and great-granddaughter Lauren Gropp.
In October of 2025, family and friends traveled from far and near to celebrate 100 years of this amazing woman. Therefore, only a small family celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made to the Bethalto United Methodist Church or Asbury Village of Godfrey, IL.
