John K. Mefford, a lifelong resident of southern Illinois and longtime Granite City resident, passed away on January 31, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of storytelling, service, and unforgettable characters—both on and off the stage.

For 25 years, John served the Six Mile Regional Library District, where generations came to know him fondly as “the bookmobile guy.” To John, libraries were living places—vehicles of imagination, history, and connection—and he brought books, curiosity, and kindness to every stop he made.

A lifelong lover of history, John immersed himself fully in the past he adored. He was a dedicated historical reenactor with the Milice de Ste. Famille, a member of the Victorian Mourning Society of St. Louis, and someone who believed history should be experienced, not merely read. That same passion for embodiment and storytelling carried naturally onto the stage.

John was an accomplished actor whose presence graced productions with Masquers, Summerstage, Alfresco Productions, and many others. Among his favorite roles were performances in 1776, The Rocky Horror Show, and Alice in Wonderland. He also appeared in independent films including Fountaine and the Vengeful Nun Who Wouldn’t Die, Absolution, and the upcoming Down the Long River.

Never one to resist a good costume, John delighted in cosplay—most famously as Boba Fett or a swashbuckling pirate—and found joy in transforming himself for the delight of others. Through Front Room Studio Photography, he captured the same creativity and character he brought to his performances.

In recent years, John became a beloved part of St. Charles Christmas Traditions, portraying Clement Moore, author of A Visit from St. Nicholas. His readings of ’Twas the Night Before Christmas became a treasured holiday tradition, enchanting audiences with warmth, humor, and timeless magic.

Above all else, John was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He is survived by his loving daughter, Winona (Adam) Patterson; his cherished grandchildren, Megan and Alexander Patterson; his dear sister, Marcia (John) Ancer; dear cousins, countless friends, colleagues, patrons, and audience members whose lives were brightened by his generosity, creativity, and unmistakable spirit.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and June (McLemore) Mefford; his first wife, Rogera (Davis) Mefford; and his second wife, Lynn (Phelps) Mefford.

In accordance with John’s wishes, he will be cremated. A Celebration of his life will start at 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at Alfresco Performing Arts Center, 2041 Delmar Avenue, Granite City, Illinois.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Six Mile Regional Library District or to the local community theatre of your choice, honoring John’s lifelong devotion to learning and the arts.
