Carol Ann Sawyer, 91, died at 6:23 p.m. on Sunday, November 16, 2025 at Bria of Godfrey. 

She was born June 30, 1934 in Alton, the daughter of the late Victor and Agnes (Herren) Ursch. She loved fishing with her Husband, traveling and gardening. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and worked along side her husband as the accountant for Sawyer Painting and Wallcovering.

On July 10, 1954 she married Patrick Eugene Sawyer, and she cared for him until his death on September 19, 2021. 

She was also preceded in death by her two brothers, Ralph and Gene Ursch, and her sister, Marjorie Miller.

Surviving are one daughter, Cynthia Townley (Joseph) of St. Petersburg, FL, two sons, Christopher Sawyer (Vicki) of Alton and Michael Sawyer of Mesa, AZ, four grandchildren, Erin Connett, Kelsey Sementa, Danielle Sawyer and Kacie Greham (John), her adored great grandchildren, Emiliana Sementa, Blair Foster, Grayson Sawyer and Alice Greham, one sister, Linda Eisenreich of Alton, and multiple nieces and nephews. 

Carol was very active in the community belonging to these organizations, Mississippi Valley Garden Club Member, Alton-Wood River Sportsmen’s Club Member, Missouri Botanical Garden Member, Alton Children’s Theater Volunteer, Jaycee’s Women’s Auxiliary, YWCA Volunteer, President of Local Women’s Golf Leagues, President of the Beta Gamma Epsilon Sorority, Alton Area Landmarks Association Member, Member of the Alton Area Motorboat Club, Member of the Alton-Wood River Sportsmen’s Club “Duck Widow’s” Association, Christian Hill Historic Society Bridge Club, and an Asbury Village Board Member. 

Visitation will be Friday, December 5, 2025 from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at Gent Funeral Home in Alton.

A memorial mass will be held Saturday, December 6, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. 

Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
