Rita Marie Pannier, nee Melton, 67, of Belleville, IL, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in O’Fallon, IL, surrounded by loved ones.

Born on March 7, 1958, in Belleville, Rita spent her life caring deeply for others, both in her work and in her relationships. She worked for many years as a restorative aide, where her compassion, humor, and no-nonsense attitude brought comfort and laughter to countless residents, families, and coworkers.

Rita was a member of Union United Methodist Church in Belleville and found joy in community and friendship. She loved a good game of pickleball, never turned down a chance to play slots, and was always up for family game night, where she was known to be extremely competitive. Those who knew her best will remember her easy laugh, her love for a good time, and her fondness for an ice-cold Bud Light.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents, Paul Ray and Beulah Mae, nee Hargan, Melton; a sister, Barbara (Bill) Lepine; four brothers, Dolan (Kathy) Melton, Paul David Melton, Kenneth Melton, and Norman Melton; a sister-in-law, Jennie Melton; and two brothers-in-law, Farrell Caesar and Joseph Zacharski.

Left to carry on her stories are her devoted wife of nine years, Mary Zellerman, who was her steadfast partner and best friend; her two loving daughters, Michelle Pannier and Kelly (Billy) Hueffmann; six brothers and sisters, Clarence Melton, Mary Caesar, Odis (Mary Ann) Melton, Richard Melton, Joseph (Lisa) Melton, and Tonya Dehn; her three sisters-in-law, Jane Melton, Jean Zacharski and Kim Lougeay; her brother-in-law, John (Debbie) Zellerman; and a long list of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who adored their “Aunt Rita.”

Rita lived life her way: loud, loving, and full of laughter. Whether she was sharing a drink or a story, she had a way of making everyone feel at home. She’ll be deeply missed but never forgotten by those who were lucky enough to know her.
