Mary Alice Elmore, 86, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away on October 21, 2024, in Granite City.
Mary was born on November 27, 1937, in Lyon County, Kentucky, to the late Violet (Bloodworth) Nickell and Thuston Samuel Nickell. She married James “Pepper” Lee Elmore, and together they raised four children: James Elmore, David Elmore, Deborah Elmore, and Timothy Elmore.
A woman of remarkable accomplishments, Mary was an educator, published author, and dedicated community servant. She earned her doctoral degree from Southern Illinois University Carbondale (S.I.U.C.), where she also taught undergraduate courses. Beyond her professional achievements, Mary devoted herself to her community as a choir director, pianist, youth director, teacher, and AmeriCorps volunteer. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son James Elmore; and her daughter Deborah Elmore.
She is survived by her two beloved sons, David Elmore and Timothy Elmore; six grandchildren—Joshua Elmore, Alex Elmore, Nathaniel Elmore, Zachary Elmore, Rachael Elmore, and Nicolas Elmore—as well as Jane Elmore and many great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Mary’s life will be held by her family at a later date. Burial will be private at Sunset Hills Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.
Mary’s legacy of love and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those she touched.
