Leonard (Butch) Fortschneider, 79, passed away on July 13, 2025.

He was born on July 25, in Brussels, IL, son of Leonard and Loretta Fortschneider.

He married Betty Schleeper on February 7, 1970. Together they shared 55 years of marriage

In addition to his wife Betty, he is survived by his children, Todd Fortschneider (Shonna), Kristi Fortschneider, and two grandchildren Ainsley and Jamison. He is also survived by his brother Gary Fortschneider, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Jeanette Held, and in-laws.

He was always proud of serving his country as a Marine. He was deployed to South Vietnam, wounded, and received a Purple Heart. He was a dedicated member of the Brussels American Legion and served as commander.

After returning from service, he worked as an Illinois meat inspector until retirement in 2000. He was also an orchardist who was proud of his home grown produce. In his free time he loved hunting and fishing with his many friends.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 17, 2025, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Gress, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home in Brussels, IL. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 18th, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brussels, IL. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Memorials can be made to the Brussels American Legion or St. Mary’s Cemetery.
