James Lemuel Edwards, 93, of Wood River, passed away at 8:30 am on Monday, November 27, 2023, at River's Crossing in Alton.
He was born on February 14, 1930, in Kansas City, KS to Henry and Hazel (Jones) Edwards.
James married Julia E. Carlton. She preceded him in death on July 7, 2015.
He had a remarkable life and made significant contributions both in military service and as a skilled carpenter. Serving in the United States Navy during the Korean War reflects a commitment to duty. Transitioning to a career as a carpenter with Local 377, he was a dedicated and talented craftsman. Working for over 50 years as a carpenter, the impact of his work is evident in the many buildings he contributed to constructing in the local area.
James had a rich and fulfilling life, filled with experiences that he cherished and shared with his loved ones. His love for his grandchildren, the stories he shared about his time in the Navy, and the special moments spent sightseeing in Charleston, SC, all reflect the importance of family and the joy he found in creating lasting memories with them. On his last trip, visiting the USS Yorktown was a fond experience for him, allowing him to reconnect with his Navy days and reminisce about the significant moments of his service.
With nicknames like "cheese man" and "rib man" he frequently brought back souvenirs from his travels to Kansas City, sharing a piece of his experiences with those around him. The impact he had on the community in Wood River is evident in the many friendships he formed, and the void left by his passing is deeply felt, especially by his family. James will be remembered not only for his professional contributions but also for the love and warmth he brought to the lives of those who knew him.
James is survived by his son, Len Edwards and his wife Elizabeth of Charleston, SC. Also, his grandkids Sylvia, Len Jr., and Alaina.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Mark Edwards, and a daughter, Sheryl Edwards.

Private graveside services will be held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
