Anthony “Tony” Romano, 99, entered into his eternal rest Sunday, July 23rd, 2017, at Christian Hospital.

He was born February 15th, 1918 in Alton, the son of Salvatore and Antonina (Terranova) Romano.  He married Josephine Berghoff in Alton on August 26th, 1939.  They were blessed to celebrate 73 years of marriage. She is deceased.

Tony was raised at the Catholic Children’s Home and returned as a young adult to be a Boy Scout leader.

He was very active in St. Mary’s Church where he was a member for 85+ years. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, and sang in the choir for 51 years. He was a member of the Alton Knights of Columbus for many years and served as an officer.

He worked at Olin Corporation as a manager of the Shipping & Receiving Department, and retired after 44 years of service. He was a member of the Management Club and the Westerner Club.

He was a member of the Alton Eagles and the Alton-Wood River Sportsman’s Club, where he and his wife Jo danced every Saturday night for many years.

Tony and Jo enjoyed travelling throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe during his retirement.

In his later years, his favorite pastime was watching Cardinal baseball and golf on TV.  Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his beloved family.

He lived at Foxes Grove Supportive Living the last 10 years, enjoying an active and fun filled life. The family expresses a heartfelt thank you to all the wonderful staff at Foxes Grove for their loving care of Tony.

Surviving are two daughters, Judi Peck of Mandeville, LA; Mary Jo Romano-Buesteton and a son-in-law he loved like a son, Joel Buesteton of Godfrey, IL; three grandchildren, Erin and husband Carl Oest-Larsen of Seattle, WA; Kyle and wife Liz Buesteton of Brentwood, MO; Sarah Buesteton of Kansas City, MO; three great-grandchildren, Lene and Kate Oest-Larsen of Seattle, WA; and Beck Anthony Buesteton of Brentwood, MO; a sister-in-law Mary Oldham and brother-in-law Robert Berghoff of Bethalto, IL; nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Rose Dipiazzo and Geraldine Martino, two brothers Frank and Andrew Romano, and son-in-law Charles Peck.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday, July 28th, 2017 at Elias Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton.  The Rosary will be recited at 4:30.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, July 29th, 2017 at 10 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton, with Father John Wykes OMV as celebrant.

He will be laid to rest at St. Joseph Cemetery in Alton.

Memorials may be made to Foxes Grove Activity Fund or St. Mary’s Church for the Choir.
