Dorothy “Dottie” Spooner-Wickenhauser, 91, passed away at 8:40 a.m. on Friday, July 15, 2016 at Fountain View Manor Memory Care in Granite City under the care of Heartland Hospice with her family by her side.
She was born on October 26, 1924 in Staunton, the daughter of the late Joseph and Dorothy (Hollowich) Goyak.
Dorothy married A. Ralph Spooner on January 1, 1944 in Staunton. He preceded her in death on May 17, 1971. She then married Richard Wickenhauser on May 30, 1986 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Alton. He survives.
Dorothy worked for Lewis and Clark Community College from 1975-2006. During her 31 years there, she worked as Senior Secretary in Counseling and Student Services, Administrative Secretary of The Foundation, Coordinator of Campus Events and Coordinator at the Great Rivers Museum. She has been of the Catholic faith for all of her life attending St. Mary’s, St. Ambrose and Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Dottie enjoyed cooking, baking, music and dancing, sewing and needle crafts, gardening and fishing. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.
In addition to her husband Richard, she is survived by three children, Cheryl (Walter “Wack”) Myers of St. Louis, MO, Rodney Spooner of Godfrey and Scott (Kathy) Spooner of Alton; six grandchildren, Jamie (Mike) Hudson, Brian (Sara) Myers, Laurie (Kevin) Scheurer, Allison (Pat) Kane, Jordan Spooner and Madelyn Spooner; three great grandchildren, Emily, Cooper and Finn.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her 1st husband, A. Ralph Spooner; an infant son, Thomas Spooner; one sister and two brothers.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 25, 2016 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey.
Funeral Service will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton with Fr. Thomas O’Connell as celebrant.
Interment will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Piasa Charitable Music Scholarship at Lewis and Clark Community College Foundation.
