Willis Franklin Chapman, 98, died at 10:32 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton. Born May 28, 1915 in Green County, IL, he was the son of Willis Edward and Addie (McClennin) Chapman. Mr. Chapman proudly serviced in the U.S. Army during WWII as a Sergeant with the Company C Combat 645 Tank Destroyer Battalion. Mr. Chapman was injured during routine training practice and service as a Military Policeman for the remained of his service in Delaware. He was a journeyman sheet metal worker at McDonnell Douglas (Boeing) until his retirement in 1979. He was a member of Alton First Southern Baptist Church (Heartland Baptist). On March 22, 1943 he married the former Dollie Chapman in Charleston, MO. She preceded him in death on February 3, 2012. Surviving is a son and daughter-in-law, Willis David and Linda Chapman of Alton, a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Charles Dale of Bethalto, a son-in-law Harold Wallace of Alton, six grandchildren, Cherryl (Sherry) Peuterbaugh of Brighton, Denise Flannery of Wood River, David J. Chapman of Eddystone, PA, Paul Wallace of Alton, Joshua Dale of Gilbert, AZ, and Jessica Dale of Ft. Worth, TX, 11 great grandchildren, and a sister, Ethel Jackson of Clinton, KY. Along with his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia (Jinny) Wallace, a grandson Phillip O. Chapman, 2 sisters and 8 brothers. Visitation will be from 2:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday, March 31, 2014 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 1:00 pm Monday March 31, 2014. Reverend Jim Grant will officiate.
