William H. “Bill” Powers, 74, of Alton, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 30 at Alton Memorial Hospital at 2:10 am with his family by his side.
The son of Orville Powers (deceased) and Ruth Kelsey of Godfrey, IL, was born August 30, 1937, in Jacksonville, IL.
Bill was a skilled craftsman and worked for Morrissey Construction Company for 27 years, at which time he left and started Powers Construction, which he ran with his wife, Carol, until his retirement in 1999. He also taught carpentry for 5 years. He was a loyal member of the carpenters union for over 50 years.
An athlete most of his life, Bill enjoyed golf and tennis over the years, but his biggest passion was his family and grandchildren and enjoyed being with them all whenever possible.
In addition to his mother, survivors include his children; Dana (and Wayne) King of Godfrey, Greg Powers of Alton, and Noel Powers (and Kathy) of Godfrey; his half-brothers, Jim Kelsey of Godfrey and Eddie Carter of Alton; and the love of his life, Carol Powers. His pride and joy were his grandchildren; Megan, Makenzie, Adam and Katie. They will deeply miss their Papa, father, and friend, and keep his memories close.
Memorial visitation will be from 9:30 till time of service at 11 am Saturday, May 5, 2012 at Main Street United Methodist Church in Alton. A luncheon will follow after the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Main Street UMC Memorial Fund. The family would like to extend their love and appreciation to the staff at AMH Intensive Care Unit, and to St. Claire Hospital for their excellent end-of-life care.
