William Lackey

Wood River |

William G. Lackey, 88, passed away on Sunday, September 25, 2011 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Alton.

He was born October 3, 1922 to James and Hester (Oxford) Lackey in Cave-in-Rock, Ill.

He retired from Laclede Steel in 1980 after 33 years of service in the Tube Mill where he was a supervisor.

He married Betty Rodgers Sept. 22, 1945 in Morganfield, Ky. She survives.

Other survivors include a son Dan (Sue) Lackey of Brighton; two grandchildren, Kim (Mike) Moxey and Brian (Casey) Lackey, all of Wood River; three great grandchildren, Jared and Morgan Moxey and Braeden Lackey, all of Wood River.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Beulah Roe; a brother, Harry Lackey; and a daughter-in-law, Janice K. Lackey.

He was a WWII veteran serving in the South Pacific for 3 years and a lifetime member of VFW Post 1308 in Alton.

He also was a member of the East Alton American Legion, the Alton Eagles, and the First General Baptist Church of Rosewood Heights.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Sept. 28 at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights from noon until services begin at 1 p.m. Rev. Dan Smith will officiate.

Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with full military honors by the East Alton American Legion Ritual Team.

Memorials may be made to Central Illinois Honor Flight or the American Lung Assoc.
