William “Bill” “Sarge” Norris

William “Bill” “Sarge” Norris, 73, died at 6:23 a.m. Thursday, January 14, 2016 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton. Born January 2, 1943 in Alton, he was the son of William and Bertha (Thomasson) Norris. Mr. Norris served in the U.S. Air Force and worked as a fireman at McDonnell Douglas for 16 years. Following that career, he became a policeman and retired as chief from the Brighton Police Department in June 2013 after 31 years of service. The police department was his life. On March 9, 1963 he married the former Rachel Nadeau at Lac Baker New Brunswick Canada. She survives. Also surviving are four children, Dr. William R. “Bob.” Norris (Julie) of Rock Hill, SC, Pam Savoie (Mark) of Los Angeles, CA, John Norris (Rhonda) of Wood River, and Kathy Gahr (Matt) of Carlinville. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Joshua, Jeremy, Sean, Travis and Madison, two great grandchildren, Mark and Kelsie, one sister, Janet Sanders (Steve) of Fair Play, MO, and several nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law Yvonne and Bill Davis and a niece Carla Grammer and a nephew Brian Davis. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday, January 17, 2016 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Visitation will continue from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 18, 2016 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Brighton. Father Bill Kessler will officiate. Burial will be at Brighton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Beverly Farm or the Macoupin/Montgomery County Crime Stoppers.
