Wayne Eugene Short, Sr., 84, died at 12:40 p.m. on Monday, January 13, 2025 at Alton Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 17, 1940 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of the late Paul and Freda (Ernst) Short.
Wayne retired after many years with Schnucks Grocery Store in Godfrey. He also worked for the Maggos family in Alton.
He was an avid car enthusiast and enjoyed going to car shows throughout the area and acquired many trophies. Wayne especially enjoyed his 1956 Chevy Bel Air, two door hardtop with a straight axel.
In 1961 in Jerseyville, he married Marybell Butkovich, and she preceded him in death.
Surviving are two daughters, Sherry Giertz and her husband, Bryan, who was a dedicated caregiver for Wayne, Stephanie Short, and one son, Wayne Short, Jr. (Judy Porebski) all of Godfrey, five grandchildren, Thomas Hans, Ashli Short (Zebedee), Dawn Laux (Ross), Adran Giertz (Ariel) and Cameron Giertz (Amina), nine great grandchildren, Gage, Willow, Jordan, Denver, Brooklyn, Keelin, Keck, Ella and Violet and one brother, Ronald Short of Jerseyville.
Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Zachary Short and one sister, Glenda VanCleave, and numerous brothers in laws and sisters in law.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton.
Burial will be at Belltown Cemetery in White Hall. Pastor Kale Hanson will officiate.
Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto.
The family would like to thank Dr. Jon Wagnon and staff for his wonderful medical care during his struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
