Walter E. Kaus, 87, died at 10:25 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, 2011 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton. He was born February 13, 1924 in Bethalto the son of the late Arthur E. and Alice (Berry) Kaus. On May 4, 1946 he married Emma L. Knoles in Springfield and she preceded him in death May 16, 2006 after 60 years of marriage. He retired in 1980 after 35 years as a building mechanic with Illinois Bell Telephone. After his retirement he enjoyed his hobby as a gunsmith. Over the years he designed and made many of his own guns as well as repaired guns for others. He is survived by one daughter; Laura Graham of Alton and one son; Arthur “Butch” Kaus and his wife Tammy of Alton. Four grandchildren; Shannon Wittman, Aaron Poindexter and his wife Sarah, Jenny Brubaker and her husband Ben, and Michael Graham. Five great grandchildren; Ashley and Samantha Wittman, Matthew T. and Lucas Poindexter and Emma Brubaker. He was preceded in death by one grandson; Matthew P. Poindexter, two brother; Lenus A. Kaus and William “John” Kaus and one sister; Sister Arlene Kaus. Memorial visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until time of Memorial service at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at Gent Funeral Home with Pastor Daymond Talkington to officiate.
