Vivienne Armstead

Sister Vivienne Armstead. aka Sister Joachim, died peacefully on March 23, 2012 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Alton, IL.  She was born in Alton on October 21, 1931, the daughter of Joseph and Mathilde (Williams) Armstead. Of her seven siblings, three survive her: her sister, Joan Armstead Eggleston of El Paso, TX, and two brothers: Rolla of Oshkosh, WI, and Gerald of Milwaukee, WI. She was preceded in death by her brothers Robert and Richard and her sisters Evalyn and Theresa.

Sister Vivienne received her elementary education at St. Patrick’s School in Alton and went to Marquette High School there. She had her own daily radio program, “The Voice of Vivienne”, when she was only sixteen, singing for those who sent post cards with their requested songs. She entered the Ursuline Sisters on July 15, 1953, in Festus, MO, made vows on January 16, 1956, and went on to get her BA at the College of New Rochelle in New York. Her Masters in English was earned at St. Louis University, and she also achieved a BME with emphasis in vocal music at the American Conservatory of Music.

Sister Vivienne has served in Alton, Springfield and Oak Park, IL; Kirkwood, Portagevile and Jennings, MO; San Antonio, TX; Frontenac, MN; and she spent three years in Pewaukee Carmel in Wisconsin. Her ministries have included Teaching, working with English as a Second Language Programs, Voice Lessons, Choir Mistress, and Summer Camp Staff. She joined the Queen of Peace Healthcare Community in December of 2011.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Ursuline Convent Chapel, 845 Danforth Street, Alton, IL .on Thursday March 29, 2012 at 10:00 a.m..with Rev. Jerry Wickenhauser, M.M. will preside Visitation will precede this Mass beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Memorials may be made to the Queen of Peace Healthcare Center, 845 Danforth Street, Alton, IL, 62002. 

Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton will be taking care of the arrangements with the Ursuline Sisters.
