Vivian Wetstein

Vivian “Babe” S. Wetstein , 104, longtime resident of North Alton, died at 11:32 p.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at Provision Living in Godfrey surrounded by family and friends.

She was born November 2, 1907 in Madison County, Illinois, the daughter of the late James and Annie (Lawless) Frasier. She married Walter P. Wetstein at St. John’s Catholic Church in Carrollton, IL on November 26, 1926 and he preceded her in death January 3, 1965. She touched many lives during her long life. Her home in Alton was used as a polling place in the 1940’s and 1950’s. She was an avid St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan and correctly predicted the Cardinals would win this year’s World Series.

Most of her life was dedicated to taking care of her son, Joey but she also enjoyed fishing, sewing, handcrafting Christmas gifts for her family and watching “Wrestling at the Chase” on television. She was a charter member of Saint Ambrose Catholic Church.

Surviving are seven grandchildren and their spouses: Vicki and her husband Lee Eft of Ankeny, Iowa, Robin and her husband Bob Bowen of Loudon, TN, Rich and his wife Fran Kortkamp of Godfrey, Vivian and her husband Larry Lefferts of Bloomington, IL, Rita Bouillon and her partner Shawn Colyer both of Sandy, Utah, Kathy and her husband Vernon DePauw of Jerseyville and Jim and his wife Karen Wetzstein of Alton, thirteen great grandchildren; Mike and Michelle Bowen, Ryan and Ashley Eft, Rachel and Alise Kortkamp, Eleanor Hess, Drew Bouillon, Lisa Fischer, Emily and Karen DePauw and Lauren and Michael Wetzstein, three great-great granddaughters; Amber Eft, Alina Hess and Mary Fischer, one niece; Sister Rosemary Everett, SNJM of Cupertino, California, and one son-in-law; Harry Kortkamp of Godfrey.

She was preceded in death by her three children; Sarah Kortkamp, Walter and his wife Polly Wetzstein and Joey Wetstein , a great grandson; John Lefferts, two brothers; Conrad Wuerz and Leo Frasier and one sister; Mary Alma Steele.

Visitation will be Thursday, November 17, 2011 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Gent Funeral Home in Alton with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 18th with Monsignor Virgil Mank to Officiate at Saint Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey. Memorials may be made to Saint Anthony’s Hospice.
