Virginia Jacoby Stooker

Virginia Jacoby Stooker, 88, passed away Saturday September 18, 2010 at Alton Memorial Hospital. 

She was born in Alton on July 17, 1922 to Paul and Mildred (Weisbach) Jacoby. 

She was a graduate of Alton High School, Gulf Park College, Gulfport Mississippi, and DePauw University, Greencastle Indiana where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. She taught English, French and Spanish at Roosevelt Junior High School in Alton.  Virginia married Marion James Stooker, Jr. on June 24, 1950. He preceded her in death on January 31, 1955.  She was also preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Dr. Robert Jacoby. 

Surviving are her children, Richard Stooker of Alton and Nancy Stooker Hill and her husband Ray of Rowley, MA; grandchildren Catherine Leen and her husband Michael of Cambridge MA and Nathan Hill of Irvine, CA; her sister-in-law, Jeanette Jacoby, and many nieces and nephews. 

Virginia was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Alton for her entire life. She served as a Deacon and an Elder and worked as Assistant Treasurer for 11 years.  Many in the area will remember Virginia for her involvement in Alton Little Theater where she was an active member. She acted in many plays, including several lead roles. She was a member of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, having appeared in commercials, movies and print ads.  Virginia served the P.E.O. Sisterhood for over 55 years in Chapter IL, Alton, IL where she was a charter member. She also belonged to the Upper Alton Women’s Club. 

Visitation will be from 4 – 8 pm, Tuesday, September 21st, at the Gent Funeral Home in Alton.  A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, September 22nd at the First Presbyterian Church in Alton with the Reverend Brett Hendrickson officiating. A graveside service will follow at the Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.  Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church in Alton, Alton Little Theater and the P.E.O.
