Violet Phipps-Fraley

Violet L. Phipps-Fraley, 94, died November 3, 2018 after several years of declining health.

Violet was born January 1, 1924 to the late Roy Boomer and Delia Ione (Gettings) Boomer-Shackleford and was the second of five daughters born to the couple.

Violet's first place of employment was the Shoe Factory in Jerseyville followed by her career as a wife and mother after her marriage to Edward Louis Phipps on October 10, 1942.

Several years later, in 1972, Violet was employed at Rudolph's Department Store in Jerseyville as a sales clerk. She retired in January of 1997. Violet and Edward were married nearly 52 years before his death on June 17, 1994. Together they raised two sons, Marion Edward and Ronald Eugene.

She later married Wilbert Fraley and gained two stepdaughters and a stepson: Anita Rose, Sue Rongey, and Earl Fraley. Wilbert preceded her in death on December 11, 2006.

Violet's greatest joys were her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many and cherished the friends she made with her co-workers and customers during her employment at Rudolph's.

Violet was a long time member of Peace United Church of Christ and Fieldon Unit of Jersey County Homemakers Extension.

Surviving are a son and two daughters-in-law: Marion and Donna Phipps of Jerseyville and Connie Phipps of Kane; 5 grandchildren: Pam Phipps of Florissant, MO, Jeff and Wendy Phipps of Jerseyville, Danny and Amy Phipps of Jerseyville, Russell and Dena Phipps of Kane, and Ashley Phipps of Kane; 11 great grandchildren: Lauren and Ryan Brunaugh, Kellie and Drew Retzer, Katelyn and Nick Bartels, Andrew, Mitchell, Angela, Chloe, and Macie Phipps, Nathaniel, Campbell, Landon; and one great-great granddaughter: Kennedy Brunaugh.

Also surviving are a stepdaughter and her husband: Sue and Don Rongey of Hardin; and a stepson: Earl Fraley, several step-grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a son: Ronald Phipps on March 1, 2015; a stepdaughter: Anita Rose on October 2, 2018; 4 sisters and 5 brothers-in-law: Ethel Mae and Walt McGowen, Eva and Charles McIntire, Inez and Joe French, Naomi and Charles Webster, and Bill Shults.

Visitation will be held on November 7, 2018 from 9:00am -11:00 am at Peace United Church of Christ in Jerseyville. Funeral will be held following the visitation on November 7, 2018 at 11:00 am at Peace United Church of Christ in Jerseyville. Rev. Deborah A. Lawson will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Peace United Church of Christ.

Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.
