Vernon E. Andersen, Sr., 92, passed away at 12:45 a.m. Monday, November 14, 2011 at Alton Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 25, 1919 in Tennessee Ridge, Tenn., he was a son of George W. and Myrtle (Travis) Andersen. The family later moved to Granite City. Vernon served during World War II in the U.S. Navy. After the Navy he returned to work for Olin Corp. in the machine shop until his retirement.
Vernon was a member of St. Paul Methodist Church of East Alton. He enjoyed bowling, clock repair and wood working, and he was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. He served many years as a volunteer for the Rosewood Heights Volunteer Fire Dept.
He is survived by his twin sister, Fern Andersen, residing at Bethalto Care Center; a son, Vernon E. Andersen, Jr. of Bethalto; a daughter and son-in-law Lana and Greg Mortland, of East Alton; Connie Counton, a dear friend; four grandchildren, Julie (Andersen) Christy and her husband Steve, Chris Andersen, Rob Helmkamp and his wife Lynn, and Amy (Mortland) Cadagin and her husband Tim; and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia E. (Bono) Andersen; his parents; a sister, Marie Egeditch; and an infant brother, Harvey Andersen.
Visitation will be at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights on Friday, Nov. 18 from 9 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Rev. Roy Gibbs will officiate.
Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.
