Thomas Martin, 84, passed away at 6:10 am Saturday October 4, 2014 at home with his family by his side.
He was born on December 21, 1929 in East Alton, the son of James M. & Irene (Smith) Martin.
Thomas married Elladee N. Jones on August 10, 1950. She survives.
He retired from McDonnell Douglas in January 1991 and was a member of the Machinist Local 837. He loved to play the banjo, piano, and harmonica. He also enjoyed airplanes, racing, sailing, astronomy, camping, bluegrass, boogie, photography and the outdoors. He was a member of the Hoedowners square dancers and he was a Cub Scout Leader. He could build a house, airplane or a car and fix anything.
In addition to his wife, Elladee, he is also survived by six children and their spouses, Linda & Bobby Scheaffer, Thomas & Karen Martin, Steven & Cynthia Martin, Gregory & Brenda Martin, Cathy & Danny Stout and Deanna Martin; thirteen grandchildren, Crystal Barnes, Brianne Bourne, Kara Martin, Megan Parker, Zach Niswander, Geoffrey, Steven and Sidney Martin, Heather and Keith Lowenstein, Brandon, Blake and Aimee Hughes; nine great grandchildren, one great- great granddaughter; and a sister-in-law, Belva Martin.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Lionel Martin, two sisters, Dorothy Lawson and Betty Giffin
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Monday October 6, 2014 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto where funeral services will be held at 11 am Tuesday with Pastor Willard Meyer officiating.
Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
