Thomas Flynn

Thomas B. Flynn, 94, died at 11:28 p.m., Monday, March 21, 2022, at his residence.

He was born in Jacksonville, Illinois on January 12, 1928, the son of Thomas Joseph and Catharyn "Wonnie" (McGuire) Flynn.

Tom attended St. James Trade School, and shortly thereafter, enlisted with the United States Navy, serving his country honorably.

He was employed as an over-the-road truck driver most of his life, in addition to owning and operating Flynn Sales and Service in Jerseyville. He drove throughout the United States well into his eighties. He had a rare talent for fixing things, and enjoyed working and tinkering with anything that needed repaired. If it was broke, he could fix it.

He met his future wife, the former Donna J. Hockling, while delivering ice cream to the grocery store in Jacksonville where she was working, and the two married on November 18, 1950, at Our Saviour's Catholic Church in Jacksonville. Together, they have been blessed with 71 years of marriage.

Surviving are his wife, Donna Flynn of Jerseyville; six children and their spouses, Jeffrey Flynn of Jerseyville, Diane Flynn of Jerseyville, Carol Jean Flynn of Springfield, Paula and David Baumgartner of Jerseyville, Joni and Jason Gross of Jerseyville, and Gregory and Carrie Flynn of Dow; ten grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Kara Dunham, Blake Dunham, and Jodi Flynn; a great-grandson, Gavin Shaun Flynn; six brothers, Paul, Edmund, Martin, Leo, Donald, and Alfred Flynn; and four sisters, Ann Rogers, Rosemary Ferry, Agnes Flynn, and Eleanor Cox.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father Hyland Smith officiating.

He will be laid to rest in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Jerseyville, with the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 conducting military graveside rites.

Memorials may be given to either the Salvation Army or BJC Hospice-Greene County.
