Theresa Newby-Harpole

Theresa Newby Harpole, 46, died Thursday, November 28, 2013 at her home in Alton after a lengthy battle with Metastatic Breast Cancer. She passed with the dignity, grace, and fighting spirit she possessed throughout her life, and was surrounded by her loving family.

Theresa was born July 1, 1967 in Alton, IL, the daughter of the late Bill and Betty (Westrich) Newby. She was a graduate of Alton High School and received a bachelor's degree in Business from SIUE. Theresa worked in Sales for McGraw-Hill. She married Todd Harpole at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Alton on May 29, 1992.

Theresa is survived by her son Josh Newby-Harpole, husband Todd Harpole, stepdaughter Monica Hornsey-Harpole, granddaughter Maggie Griggs, four sisters, two brothers, and two sisters-in-law; Linda (Mike) Morrissey, Patti (Frank) Hughes, Noreen Newcome Newby, Kathy (Terry) Bristow, Nancy (John) Magurany, all of the Alton/Godfrey area, William (Ana) Newby of San Mateo, CA, Randy Newby (Guillermo Garcia) of Chicago, and Jennifer Harpole (John) Gold of Tampa, FL; twenty three nieces and nephews; Michael (Amanda) Morrissey, Vanessa (Randy) Bassett, Ryan (Sara) Morrissey, Ashley Hughes, Afton (Ben) DeCourcey, Ali Hughes, Heather (Andrew Flye), Jacob and Zach Newby, Nicole and Calvin Bristow, Jason (Laura) Bristow, Johnny, Joe, and Jarad Magurany, Eoin, Adan, William, and Arturo Newby, Alex, Brad, and Carolyn Taul, and Tesla Gold. She is also survived by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Carloyn Harpole of Alton. She was preceded in death by her brother, Michael Newby.

The core of Theresa’s life was her family, friends, positive attitude, and strong faith. She treated each day as a gift. She loved to travel, and took every opportunity to be at the beach and enjoy a beautiful sunset. Theresa was committed to helping others, especially those with Metastatic Breast Cancer, and with her son founded the Theresa Harpole Foundation for Metastatic Breast Cancer. In its first year, the Foundation has raised over $50,000.

Unconditional love, the power of faith and prayer, and living every day to the fullest were the core of how she lived her life. She deeply loved and cared for her family and beloved dog and companion, Buffalo. Her strength and positive attitude, combined with a witty sense of humor, inspired anyone who was fortunate enough to be part of her life.

Visitation will be from 6:00  - 8:30 p.m. Monday, December 2, 2013 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton. The Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at Sts. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church in Alton. Graveside services will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. Monsignor Kenneth Steffen will officiate.
