Theona Mae “Spiv” Woelfel, 85, passed away at home at 9:15 am Monday August 29, 2011.
She was born on May 5, 1926 in Brussels, the daughter of Theodore “Ted” & Anna R. (Fischer) Narup.
She graduated from Brussels High School and was employed many years as a sales clerk at Famous-Barr in Alton.
She married George L. Woelfel on February 9, 1946 at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church and he preceded her in death on December 4, 1993.
She was a member of Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton where she was very active and instrumental in starting the Gift Shop along with her sister Evelyn Keehner. She also started the program “Friends in time of need” which helps serve funeral luncheons.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Tom & Teresa Woelfel of Jerseyville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon Rexford of Alton, Kathleen & Dale Henderson of Alton, and Laurie & Matt Horn of Godfrey; twelve grandchildren and spouses, Scott & Melissa “Missy” Woelfel, Lance & Amanda Woelfel, Regina & Eric Broeckling, Jason & Theresa Rexford, Nathan & Amanda Henderson, Carrie Henderson, Annie & Joe Kessler, Jenny Henderson, Stephanie & Matt McLeod, Sam Horn, Marykate Horn, and Georgia Horn; 13 great grandchildren, Nick and Courtney Woelfel, Jason “J.D.” Rexford, and Leslie Rexford, Dane & Delaney Henderson, Alyssa Broeckling, Bethany Broeckling, Ethan, Brody McLeod, Noah Woelfe1, Maddie and Mercedes Kessler; one sister, Evelyn Keehner of Alton; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.
“Spiv” was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George Woelfel, two sisters, Viola Narup and Bernadette Dykeman; and five brothers, Everette “Bus” Narup, Richard “Dick” Narup, Theodore “Ted” Narup Jr., Robert “Bob” Narup and Leland Narup.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 3 to 7 pm Wednesday August 31, 2011 at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 7 pm with Fr. Delix Michel SSL celebrant.
Burial will be private at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey.
