Steven M. Reynolds, age 65, of Carrollton, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at Carlinville Rehabilitation & Health Care Center with his wife, Susan, by his side.

Steve was born on June 20, 1959, in Carrollton, Illinois and was the son of the late Donald Sr. and Ruth (Whiteside) Reynolds.

He married the love of his life, Susan Hartman, on June 10, 1989, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Carrollton and she survives.

Also surviving are his step-mother, Donna Reynolds of Streator; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Marietta and Bob Walker and Sandy and David Evans; nieces and nephews, Mandy (Justin) Pohlman, Shana (Travis) Queen, Justin Reynolds (fiancée Dawna Hale), Robyn (Travis) Klingler, Tina (Rick) Schrock, Hart Walker, Bobette (Nate) Barnett, Chas (Tiffany) Walker, Katelyn (Levi) Petzoldt, and Kea (Hayden) Harshbarger; great-nieces and great-nephews, Grant and Sophia Pohlman, Bryce and Jeana Queen, Ava Reynolds, Grant, Marley, and Layna Mullink, Nash Klingler, Emma Schrock (fiancé Lane Avenatti), Brady Schrock, Landen, Kallie, and Kenzie Petzoldt, Rory Walker, and one great-niece on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Susan Anderson and a brother, Donald Reynolds, Jr.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Herbert and Henrietta Hartman; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Kay Hartman.

Steve graduated from Carrollton High School in 1978 where he was active in track and field by throwing the shot put and discus. He graduated from Illinois College in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History where he also threw the shot put and discus. To this day, Steve still holds the discus record at Illinois College since 1983. He earned his Master of Arts degree in History from Western Illinois University in 1986 and his teaching certification from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville in 1988.

Steve worked for the Illinois Department of Corrections as an Educator until he was hired by the Carrollton Community Unit School District to be a middle school Social Studies teacher and track coach. Steve taught History and Geography to many students in Carrollton from August of 1991 until his retirement in May of 2017. He loved teaching athletes how to excel in throwing the shot put and discus.

Steve loved the time he spent on the golf course with his friends and he often repaired and built golf clubs for others. Steve was an amazing cookie and candy maker and he loved sharing his cookies, caramels, and turtles with everyone. Steve will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.

Steve was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church where he served as an usher. Steve was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1996 and he truly enjoyed volunteering and spending time with the members of the Knights of Columbus. After his retirement, Steve worked part-time at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Carrollton. It was a privilege for Steve to serve the public and he cherished the friendships he made.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 31, 2025, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Carrollton with burial at St. John’s Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 30th, with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. at the church. Memorials may be made to St. John’s Capital Campaign to build a new cafeteria or to St. John’s Cemetery. Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton is in charge of the arrangements.
