Alton |
Sister Muriel Rose Boyle, O.S.U. aka Sister Mary Augustine, died peacefully at the Ursuline Queen of Peace Infirmary in Alton, Illinois on July 25, 2011. The daughter of Francis Joseph Boyle and Rose Moran, she was born February 24, 1924, in Lowell Massachusetts. Of her three siblings, her sister, Ruth McDade, survives her. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Arthur Boyle.
Muriel Rose attended elementary school at St. Peter’s in Lowell, Massachusetts, and secondary school with the Ursuline Sisters at Ursuline Academy in Lowell. She entered the Ursuline Sisters in 1944 and made her first vows in May of l947. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, in l968. Enjoying a reputation as an excellent primary teacher, she served more than fifty years in the schools of Laredo, San Antonio, and Falfurrias, Texas; and Springfield, Illinois. She continued doing volunteer work in two schools in Dallas, Texas, near her senior citizen residence center until she retired and came to the Queen of Peace Healthcare Center in Alton, Illinois in 2008. Still having “chalk dust in her veins”, she walked over to West Elementary School in Alton to offer her service as a volunteer there and chuckled as did those who observed her, when she went to the police station, veil and all, to undergo the finger print requirement for this work.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 on Friday, July 29, at the Ursuline Convent Chapel, 845 Danforth Street, Alton, Illinois. Visitation will precede this Mass beginning at 9:30 am. Rev. Mark Dean, OMI, will preside.
