Sr. Jean Marie (Marion) Deleery, O.S.U.



Sister Jean Marie Deleery, aka Marion Deleery, died peacefully at the Ursuline Queen of Peace Infirmary in Alton, Illinois, on September 19, 2010.  The daughter of Martin Emil Deleery of Guernsey Island, and Orelia Sutherland Deleery of Algiers, she was born on July 28, 1926, in Galveston, Texas.  Her sister, Doris Ann Deleery Slagle and several nieces and nephews survive her.  Three brothers, Edward James Deleery, Joseph Sutherland Deleery, and Martin Emil Deleery, Jr preceded her in death.



Sister attended elementary school at St. Patrick’s in Galveston, and secondary school at Ursuline Academy in Galveston.  On July 15, 1944, she entered the Ursuline Sisters and made her vows at Crystal City, Missouri, on January 16, 1947.  She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Fontbonne and a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling from Prairie View A & M University.  A much-loved teacher and school principal, she served in Dallas and Galveston, Texas; Kirkwood, Missouri; Alton and Springfield, Illinois; and New Orleans, Louisiana.



Having survived Hurricane Katrina while in a hospital in New Orleans, she made her home until her death in the Queen of Peace Healthcare Community in Alton, Illinois, beginning in October of 2005.



A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, September 23, 2010, at 10:30 A.M. in the Ursuline Convent Chapel, 845 Danforth Street, Alton, Illinois.  Visitation will precede this Mass beginning at 9:30A.M. Reverend Mark Dean, O.M.I., will preside.



Memorials may be made to the Ursuline Queen of Peace Healthcare Community, 845 Danforth Street, Alton, Illinois, 62002.



Arrangements are being handle by Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton.
