Sister Ruth Marie Call, aka Ruth Helen Call, died peacefully at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Alton, Illinois on September 25. 2010. The daughter of Michael Albert Call and Honorah Anastasia Conlon, she was born January 4, 1912, in Riverton Illinois. She was preceded in death by three sisters: Henrietta Call Foster, Dorothy Call Shafer, and Florence Call, and by four brothers: Dr. James J. Call, Dr. Charles C. Call, Hugh H. Call and Ralph R. Call. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews in the Springfield area, in California, and in Wisconsin.
Ruth attended elementary school at St. Mary’s in Springfield, Illinois, and SS Peter and Paul in Alton, Illinois. She received her secondary education at Ursuline Academy in Springfield, Illinois, and then studied at Fontbonne College in St. Louis, Springfield Junior College, and University of Notre Dame, Loyola University in New Orleans and Loyola University in Chicago. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics, a Masters in Theology, a Masters in Chemistry, and a Masters equivalent in Latin. In the midst of these educational endeavors, she entered the Ursuline Sisters on July 1, 1930, and made vows on January 3, 1933. Her wonderful education made her a master teacher, and she taught for sixty-five years in DeSoto and Kirkwood, Missouri; Springfield, Alton, and Oak Park in Illinois; and New Orleans, Louisiana. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, she came to live in the Queen of Peace Healthcare Community in Alton, Illinois.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 on Friday, October 1, at the Ursuline Convent Chapel, 845 Danforth Street, Alton, Illinois. Visitation will preceded this Mass beginning at 9:30.
Reverend Mark Dean, O.M.I. will preside.
